A note on genetic isolation of Mediterranean sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) suggested by mitochondrial DNA
نویسندگان
چکیده
Thirteen sperm whales were sampled, using sloughed skin, in the Mediterranean Sea during six distinct encounters. Individuals discriminated results of molecular sexing, mitochondrial control region sequencing and microsatellite genotyping (3 loci). Samples from 57 specimens available whale strandings on northern European coasts. The first ~ 200bp DNA (mtDNA) each sample sequenced three different haplotypes identified. frequency haplotype was significantly between eastern North Atlantic, suggesting that two areas comprise maternal entities.

Can genetic differences explain vocal dialect variation in sperm whales, Physeter macrocephalus?
Sperm whale social groups can be assigned to vocal clans based on their production of codas, short stereotyped patterns of clicks. It is currently unclear whether genetic variation could account for these behavioural differences. We studied mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation among sympatric vocal clans in the Pacific Ocean, using sequences extracted from sloughed skin samples. We sampled 194 i...
متن کاملModeling acoustic propagation of airgun array pulses recorded on tagged sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus).
In 2002 and 2003, tagged sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) were experimentally exposed to airgun pulses in the Gulf of Mexico, with the tags providing acoustic recordings at measured ranges and depths. Ray trace and parabolic equation (PE) models provided information about sound propagation paths and accurately predicted time of arrival differences between multipath arrivals. With adequate ...
متن کاملPatterns of kinship in groups of free-living sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) revealed by multiple molecular genetic analyses.
Mature female sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) live in socially cohesive groups of 10-30, which include immature animals of both sexes, and within which there is communal care of the young. We examined kinship in such groups using analyses of microsatellite DNA, mitochondrial DNA sequence, and sex-linked markers on samples of sloughed skin collected noninvasively from animals in three grou...
متن کاملFatal ingestion of floating net debris by two sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus).
In 2008 two male sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) stranded along the northern California coast with large amounts of fishing net scraps, rope, and other plastic debris in their stomachs. One animal had a ruptured stomach, the other was emaciated, and gastric impaction was suspected as the cause of both deaths. There were 134 different types of nets in these two animals, all made of floatin...
متن کاملSPERM WHALE (Physeter macrocephalus): North Atlantic Stock
STOCK DEFINITION AND GEOGRAPHIC RANGE The distribution of the sperm whale in the USA Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) occurs on the continental shelf edge, over the continental slope, and into mid-ocean regions (Figure 1). Waring et al. (1993) suggest that this offshore distribution is more commonly associated with the Gulf Stream edge and other features. However, the sperm whales that occur in th...
